WHAT IS TESTOSTERONE?
Testosterone is an androgen steroid hormone made naturally by your body and is responsible for the normal development and growth of males, as well as reproductive organs and maintenance of other sexual characteristics. Testosterone is produced primarily in the testes, the reproductive glands that also produce sperm. The amount of testosterone produced by the testes is regulated by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus. It is the principal male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid. Testosterone is essential for health and well-being as well as the prevention of osteoporosis, which, though not as common as in women, men can, and do, develop.
The physiological actions of testosterone in males are far reaching. For example:
NORMAL LEVELS OF TESTOSTERONE
The brain and the testes work together to keep testosterone levels within normal range. Testosterone levels in men, also known as T levels, are considered normal if they are between 300 ng/dL and 1200 ng/dL. Studies estimate that today, two to four million men in the U.S. alone suffer from low testosterone levels, a condition known as hypogonadism. The symptoms of hypogonadism are often overlooked because they are often mistaken for ordinary signs of aging. It is estimated that only 5% of the millions of men with hypogonadism are currently being treated.
Men with below-normal testosterone may experience all or some of the following symptoms:
TREATING LOW TESTOSTERONE LEVELS
Returning hormone levels to a normal range can have genuine, positive effects. Many men will notice improved strength and endurance, better overall feeling of well-being, as well as a return of libido and improved sexual function.
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is a testosterone replacement therapy using bioidentical hormones, hormones that are chemically identical to those your body produces. These treatments contain hormones and other prescriptions and supplements formulated specifically for you, with dosages and ingredients based on your individual lab tests results and physical exam.
The treating physician must prescribe Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy following an in-person physical examination and evaluation. A valid assessment of a patient for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy requires specific blood tests, as well as a physical evaluation and assessment for testosterone deficiency, by a physician.
Intramuscular testosterone has been used for years due to its effectiveness and low cost. Whereas free testosterone has a half-life of only 10 minutes, the esterification process renders testosterone less polar and more lipid soluble, thereby prolonging its duration of action. Delivery of these esters through an oil-based depot injection allows their slow release.
Testosterone injections are used in men with conditions associated with deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone (Low T). Blood tests should be run before treatment begins, and periodically throughout treatment to check hemoglobin and hematocrit levels when receiving long-term testosterone injection treatments.
